What is the Bitoujiao Trail?
Nestled along Taiwan’s northeastern coast, the Bitoujiao Trail offers a delightful escape into nature. Suited for hikers of all levels, this 3.5km trail unveils mesmerizing views of the coastline, mountains, and the East China Sea. Although completing the trail can take just an hour, allocating 2-3 hours ensures you can soak in the breathtaking scenery. The well-maintained path, a mix of stairs and wooden pavement, guarantees a pleasant hike.

How to get to the Bitoujiao Trail from Taipei
Embarking on the journey from Taipei City Hall Bus Station might test your patience. From Taipei City Hall Bus Station it takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes to reach the trail. The most convenient way is to take the 1800A from the station to Keelung Train Station (Maritime Plaza). From there you can take the 791 bus directly to the station called Bitoujiao (Bitou Service Area). To stay informed about bus schedules in Taipei City and New Taipei City, I can recommend the Bus Tracker App for Android devices and iPhones.
Course of the Bitoujiao Trail
As you step off the bus, a simple overpass aids in crossing the street. The trail starts with a gentle ascent along Bitou Road. Be aware of the cars unsuccessfully trying to find a parking place nearer to the trail, since the road is very narrow. Just five minutes in, the “燈塔小舖” café appears, offering a great opportunity to fuel your body with the caffeine needed for the trail.
Past the café, the path transitions to a set of stairs, revealing a beautiful view of New Taipei Bitou Primary School by the ocean and mountains – a sight any student would envy.

Continue the trail to the left and enjoy the scenic view of the ocean and lush greenery surrounding the trail. Thoughtfully placed observation decks, accompanied by benches, provide perfect spots to take a break while soaking in the view. The trail gradually ascends, and in 20-30 minutes, you’ll reach the 聽濤cafe nestled between two hills. Once a military warehouse, it now serves as a charming rest area with both indoor and outdoor seating, allowing hikers to recharge while enjoying the scenery.

Post-rest, the trail unfolds to the left, following a ridge between “summits” that offer picturesque views on either side. To the left, behind Bitou Harbour, the green peaks of Taiwan’s mountains unfold, while on the right, the expansive waters of the East China Sea stretch out. Capture the moments for your social media or simply appreciate the beauty.

Finishing the trail, a series of stairs guide you back to Bitou where your journey began. Take a leisurely stroll along the harbor, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The Bitoujiao Trail promises a memorable hiking experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike along Taiwan’s captivating coast.
